"Dear Captain Stacey,"

"Yesterday I flew and it was the best flight I've had in years. Everytime a plane noise or movement began to make me nervous, I just remembered everything you said, and I felt okay. During the decent, which is usually my worst time, I discovered a little game to play with myself. This may sound crazy, but I imagined that I was the plane (like a happy cartoon plane with my arms out) and that the captain and I were great old friends and were completely confident and in control of landing the plane. It really worked. I never got nervous during the decent or the landing. It was almost fun. It was amazing! Thank you again for everything. It worked!!"

"Dear Sir, just wanted to say an extra thank you for wonderful course and the time you gave to me in responding to my e-mail! It was the first time that I flew without being in a big knot the whole time. We flew over the Thanksgiving holiday. The breathing exercises really helped my son, who was terrified to make the flight. We used the "cheat sheets" a lot and found them to be a great help! I will send you our response sheet soon along with a donation, which I am grateful to send. So, please keep up the good work and thank you for your support. The site was not only a lot of fun to watch it was well researched and very professionally done. The graphics are great! Take care."

"I've written you before, and I consider myself a regular visitor to your Fear of Flying Help website. Your site is extremely informative and helpful to all who visit. I've told several people about your site, some of whom have also been quite impressed with the material you present. I just recently returned from a trip, and while I was a little nervous, I actually found myself looking forward to the flying portion of my trip. I am quite amazed at the number of people who are flying these days, even though most airlines have reduced the numbers of flights. I think that the news media is actually causing some people (especially those who have had fears of flying for some time) to rethink their travels by air. Anyway, thanks again. I've already made arrangements for an upcoming trip. And I plan on visiting your website several times before my next flight for updated information."

"P.S. Maybe one of these days, I'll hear your name announced as the pilot of my flight."

"Dear Captain Stacey,"

"Hello and how are you? First of all, thanks so much for having such a sensationally BRILLIANT SITE!:) *YAY* I am from New Zealand. You must receive many e-mails cuz your site is one of the best ones I've ever been to. All the links work, presented in an interesting manner and really easy-reading, which helps the learning process so much sensationally faster! Well done! Anyways, being a nervous passenger on a plane, this course has helped me a lot, and I sure will re-take the course just before my next flight in December. I love planes. The strange thing is that with all my love of planes, I still don't like sitting in one. I guess it could be due to my lack-of-control feeling, such as what you mentioned about on your website:) *SMILES* Personally, I think pilots are the coollest people in the workforce! Most skilled and most professional. And everything you said on the site make sense, and thus allows us to think logically. For example, when you talked about the media, and how they portray false senses of security in people. Another example is when you explained the reasons for having "bumpy" flights just after take-offs and before landings - due to warm air lifting up etc. In the feedback section at the end of one of the lessions, for my answer to "What should the site contain more informatin about", I chose, "More information about the weather". Does bad weather make pilots job really really hard and thus be dangerous? Thanks for your time. It's really so sensational to have the opportunity to talk with a real-life pilot. I hope I will hear from you soon and get some cool inside facts on flying!

"I've just finished your "Fear of Flying" course and I'd like to express both my thanks and congratulations on a job well done. I found your course to be most informative and helpful and your motiviation most refreshing - it makes a pleasant change to come across someone today who cares enough about the way things are enough to actually do something about them. Congratulations on a job well done !!!!!!"

"Dear Captain Stacey"

"Before the terrorist attacks in the US, I only had a normal fear of flying. However, after reading your brilliant course, I feel so much more excited about our adventure. Before, this was always clouded by the worries of the flight but you have explained everything so very clearly. I like the bit, under the hijack section, about everyone watching each other as a potential hilacker! And what with the limited "weaponry" thanks to more stringent security checks, even I would physically tackle a man with a plastic fork, for the sake of my children! I cannot thank you enough for making the aeroplane my graceful carriage taking my precious cargo to their new life, and not an object to be feared any more. You're the best."

"I never had a problem flying until I encountered a particularly difficult flight a number of years ago. I put off flying as much as I could until this year where I found myself both geographically and financially in a position to travel more. I searched the net for help and came across your site. Your advise really worked. Having read everything explained on your site, it all seemed so much more normal when I was up there. Your site also made me aware that I am certainly not alone in my fears. I won't speak too soon, but I think you have cured my phobia! Thank you."

From email October 16, 2001

"Although I have flown before, in the last couple years I have become quite fearful of flying. Nobody likes to sit by me as I squeeze their arm so hard during takeoff...I have even been known to grab on to stranger sitting next to me. I don't exactly know where those fears originated from because I have NEVER experienced anything negative on a plane before (not even turbulence...knock on wood). After everything happened on Sept. 11, I told my family that I was never flying again. And know I have no choice but to fly. I didn't know if there would be anything on the Internet about fears of flying, however I went to several websites on this matter and found yours to be extremely helpful. Thank you for putting so much time and thought into something you have so much knowledge about. It really helped me to read about the way a plane moves and all of the maintenance planes go through. The thing I fear most is the takeoff. I am always afraid that the tail of the plane is going to scrape the runway or the engines will fail and the plane will fall backwards. That must seem silly to you. Nobody I know is afraid of flying so they really don't understand the shear panic I have been going through this last week. Your website has been extremely helpful, THANK YOU!!!!!"

From email September 30, 2001

"Stacey:

I DID IT! I have to tell you, that if it wasn't for the lesson you have where you tell EVERYTHING to expect, I wouldn't have been able to do it. Especially your comment that a plane has never gone down because of turbulence - we had a bit flying home today."

"I did "freak" a bit on take off but once we were up there, I was fine, in fact, I have to admit, it was rather soothing (like being rocked in a womb). Thank you again for your site. I can tell you with 100% assurity, that your words enabled me to do this! Thank you!"

"P.S. I gladly made a donation!"

From email September 30, 2001

"Dear Captain Chance:"

"I just finished your course. Thank you so very much. I have flown for years, but over time have developed a fear of flying. I am now to the point where I refuse to fly whatsoever. I have lost business opportunities because I will not fly places. I even worry that if relatives die, I will not be able to attend the funeral, because I do not want to fly there, and the drive would take two or three days, which is time I cannot afford to spare. This coming November, I am scheduled to teach a class in Arizona. It is very far from home and I cannot take the four to six days it would require to drive both ways. For the past month, instead of buying an airline ticket, I have been thinking about what I am going to tell the Symposium sponsors at the last minute about me not showing up."

"My name and course has been printed and distributed in the symposium magazine. Fortunately, I am not the only speaker there, so I will not be overly missed; but still, there is a pinch because I would very much enjoy teaching the course and networking with the others."

"Then, today, I found your site."

"I went through all the lessons in about one hour, and thoroughly enjoyed both the content and your personable style. Most importantly, I feel 100% better about flying, and found myself eagerly looking forward to the trip. Your information was presented so clearly, and logically. And it definitely helped to understand the background of the industry and that turbulence shouldn't cause an airplane to crash."

"Overall, the course made my day, and I think I will be able to take flights again. Thank you so very much."

"P.S. I absolutely think your materials should be in the pouch on the back of every seat, in every plane..... (Sometimes I think it is other people's fears that contribute to my own -- so your literature can help everyone!) Again, all my best to you and yours. I very much appreciate the time you took to write the materials, and to create a website for people to learn."

From email September 29, 2001

"Hello Captain"

"I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for your help. I took your course about a month ago and it helped immensely. I've flown for many years, fearless, and for some reason this year, anxiety and panic attacks hit me. I was now a person who was totally terrified of flying. I took a trip to Europe, so you can imagine how long of a flight I had to deal with. I went on board as prepared as I could possibly be. I even had Xanax as a back up, just in case. During take off, I started to get really nervous. I closed my eyes, did some of your breathing techniques, "tense this" techniques and next thing I knew, we were off. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be, thanks to you. Then came the sounds of the aircraft, no problem. I knew what the sounds were and didn't get paranoid. Throughout the whole flight I used these 2 techniques, believe it or not I didn't need the rest, and I was completely calm and relaxed. Never had to use the Xanax. I finally arrived to my destination and all I wanted to do was celebrate. I did it! Of course, with the help of you. I did all this on my return flight as well. I did have to take another moment to say thank you. I sent a donation to help you better your site, not that it's needed. I enjoyed your bonus page, there was lots of interesting stuff on there. Well, keep up your wonderful work, keep up your humor (which was probably my most favorite part in reading), and I hope someday to have you as my pilot. :)
Take care."

From email September 19, 2001

"Thank you so much for offering your fear of flying course. I found the best part was learning how a plane actually operates-it helped to shatter misconceptions about how airplane crashes happen. Even understanding the mechanics of turbulence-I really thought it meant the plane is plunging!"

From email September 18, 2001

"Dear Captain Chance,"
"Thank you so much for your outstanding website. I have been very afraid of flying for several years, and my fear has only grown worse after the recent terrorist attacks. I must fly to my wedding and was desperate to find something to help me overcome my fear. I think your website and the information provided is fantastic. Thank you again!"

From email September 18, 2001

"I just wanted to let you know how much I learned from your Fear of Flying Help web site. I'm sure many people are re-evaluating flying based on what happened earlier this week in New York, Pennsylvania & Washington D.C. I've always had a bit of a fear as far as flying is concerned. Usually, the fear subsides once I get on the plane and the plane takes off. I've printed out the help sheets and will plan on using them for my next trip. Thanks again. I plan on re-visiting your site from time to time, and I'll share your info with other friends who are air-travelers."

From email September 15, 2001

"Dear Captain Stacey,"

"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to follow this course. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Every time I have to get on a plane I sweat from take-off until landing. Understanding the proceedures and what goes on in the air has made me feel more confident in flying. I will write again after my next flight and let you know how it went."

From email September 9, 2001

"Hi Captain Stacey,"

"OK, it was not perfect, but it was the best flight I have had in YEARS. The most amazing thing happened, we had to wait on the runway for about 30 minutes and I actually fell asleep! I also slept on the way in flight... that has NEVER happened."

"The 'tense this" worked so well! My man kept grabbing my hand, thinking I was falling apart, but I said that I was putting all my tension in that hand and letting it go."

"On take off, when the acceleration felt like it was fluctuating I KNEW what was going on. Turbulence was not a problem (it wasn't bad, but in the past ANY slight motion from the plane set me off)"

"I talked to the Captain, briefly before our flight back and he was very kind (very official too, but I liked that)."

"I'm sure I will always get nervous a little, but that's normal for a lot of people. It's just that the TERROR was gone...replaced mostly by the fact that I was afraid of something that was not going to happen (a crash). When I got that straight, I realized that I was NOT afraid of flying. I was afraid of what was going on in my head."

"I'm just so very happy. A 5 hour flight, a flight I have put off for years. It was amazing. You will get a donation from me. Thank you so so very much."

From email September 5, 2001

"I found your course to be very helpful. I have a fear of flying and it never seems to go away any time I fly. I have a trip coming up in a couple of weeks and will use your valuable information to help me. The breathing has helped me in the past and I will continue to use it in the future. This is great advice to give to people who suffer from anxiety and panic."

"Thanks again for giving me answers to a lot of questions I had about what certain noises meant and how safe flying really is."

"Keep up the good work!"

From email September 4, 2001

"Thank you for getting back to me. I wanted to let you know that I had the best flight I've had in a long time. I kept thinking of the things you went over and I really felt less anxious, so the program is working. Thank you so much."

From email September 3, 2001

"Dear Captian Stacey,"

"Thank you, thank you so very much! You are the first person that has offered me some real advice and comfort. I kept looking for facts, especially on turbulence, I couldn't find it anywhere! Thank you once again for compiling this webpage, you are a kind soul and may you have the best in life!"

From email August 31, 2001

"Hello Captain Stacey,"

"I don't know how to thank you for this wonderful website! I have been afraid to fly for the longest time, even though I still did it, but I was never really confortable on the plane. Your website has helped me a lot, and answered lots of my questions. Thank you again so very much."

From email August 30, 2001

"Thank you, Thank you. This is what I have been looking for, for a long time. Something to make me understand. I always knew that knowledge empowers and my greatest fear was just the unknown. How does the plane fly, how well qualified are the mechanics, what happens if all the engines fail? Every one of these questions and so many more are addressed with great detail."

"I don't know if after going through your course I am cured, but I do have a new confidence and understanding. That's a great security blanket! My next flight is in 2 weeks. I will send you my Feedback form. I have already made a contribution. So important to continue this wonderful service. Hopefully it will help others in the way that it has helped and touched me. Oh and also, I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate the time you have taken and the thought you put into developing this course. Invaluable!!"

From email August 29, 2001

"I had a fabulous flight to and from California as a result of your online course. It helped me tremendously. I was much more relaxed than I had been in the past. I used to actually feel physicaly sick from all of the anxiety over the flight, but this time I felt fine before, during and after the flights."

"I referred to your checklists several times before each flight, and never needed to write down any anxiety or fears I had, as I had none! I've already told some close friends and relatives about your website, and they were interested to hear about it to help them. So again, thank you very much for your wonderful online course which really changed my feelings about flying!!"

"I hope you will continue to update it in the future so that I can read it again before my next flight, and others can benefit from it as I did. Thanks again."

From email August 26, 2001

"Hi! I wrote you before I went on my flight, about my fear of flying. I just want you to know that I flew both ways without any fear at all, thanks to your on-line course. I was so petrified before I read your information, that I was having anxiety attacks (which I never get). I was incredibly nervous. But after I read your info, I went on the plane knowing that it was perfectly safe. I talked to the pilots in the cockpit like you suggested and they really were nice and that experience helped me so much, probably because they were so calm about flying (as well as the flight attendants who I spoke with)."

"Your explanation about how flying works, how air is like water, and holds the plane up, and how a plane works, also helped, as well as those statistics of the millions of people who fly each day, and how cleaning your toilet is more dangerous than flying!!! Anyway, I have no fear of flying anymore. I just want to thank you for your caring and help with this phobia. I thought I was uncurable, and I was wrong. Now I am looking forward to flying again, knowing now how safe it is. Thanks!!!"

"P.S. The trip was awesome!"

From email August 25, 2001

"Dear Captain,"

"I just finished your course on overcoming the fear of flying. And I feel 100% better about it all! When I first found this course, I was biting my nails, just hoping I would find something to ease this fear. And the fear was very strong!"

"I'm getting ready to take my SECOND flight next week. I have (No HAD) a fear so uncontrollable, I have had a constant knot in my stomach going on a week now. This will be my first flight, just for me, for my first vacation away from home! I have been planning for this trip for a very long time. Hoping and praying one day I would be able to make this trip. Now the time has finally come, and I can hardly believe it! I have had to overcome many obsticales to finally make it to this point. And with my OVERACTIVE imagination, I was beginning to think something was trying to stop me from making this trip! As hard as it has been, nothing has stopped me yet. And there is only one thing left to stop this vacation. The PLANE RIDE! I was actually thinking to myself, have I made fate so mad, will it try one last thing to make sure I dont accomplish this trip?"

"I was starting to pay attention to news reports, because I had already been on a plane! Then to make matters worse, I have seen quite a few films about crashes. Like "Alive" "Survive" and the most scarest of all "Final Destination" which I have seen recently, and I really wish I hadnt! So with the fear of a force trying to stop me from making this trip, and the nervousness of the vacation itself. And then the constant visuals I keep playing in my head, scenes from the movies I have seen, No wonder I was scared out of my mind! "

"From the first word of your lesson, I thought I was about to have a panic attack. By the time I read the last word in your lesson, I was smiling, calm, laughing, with happy tears running down my face! I couldnt believe how quick it took me to overcome this fear! You explained everything perfectly! I easily understood everything. And you did this in a very caring, and humorous manner, which made it alot easier to grasp!"

"I'm at the point where I feel absolutely ridiculous for being this scared! Just a minute ago, my 6 year old son walked by with a plate of food. He had a few hotdogs on his plate, uncut, and I always make sure he has his hotdog cut up, so he doesnt have that chance to choke. Sometimes, I let it slid by, with no fears whatsoever. As he walked by, I stared at his plate, and I remember what you said, about other, simple things in life that have a greater chance of hurting or killing us before a flight will. I instinctively grabbed his plate and got to cutting! If I had a plane in my backyard at the time, I would have rather put him on that plane than to eat those hotdogs uncut! LOL! It was so great to have this thought in my head!! "

"Captain Stacey, it has been a pleasure taking your course, you just have no idea how much safer you have made me feel. Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this course! I am so grateful, I plan on making a contribution as soon as possible! Thanks agian for all your support!"

From email August 22, 2001

"It's a day later after taking your course. I thought about my flight all day today, and I feel so good about it! I was telling a few of my co-workers what a great job you did with your website. They know how nervous I have been about this flight, and they were just amazed at the difference in me. I have handed out your web address to all of them and told them to pass it on to anyone they know that might have a fear of flying. I've prepared my package to take with me to the airport, its so great!

Thanks agian Captian, all of the effort you have put into this really does make a difference in peoples lives, it did mine!"

From email August 23, 2001

"Hello Captain Stacey,

I must say I was very impressed with your with your course. It touched on everything and gave people such as myself a calming affect. I have flown many times and I have to admit that I have been nervous every single time. I am certain the fear of flying will always be with me but at least now I have some tools to help me stay in check."

From email August 22, 2001

"I had no fears before or during my flight- very relaxed. I always closed my eyes and ears during takeoff and landing- this is the first time I didn't.

This is unbelievable as I was always a basket case! Thank you."

From Feedback Form mailed August 22, 2001

"HI! I have an intense fear of flying that developed more than 10 years ago. I was never afraid when I was younger, but it developed to the point where I refused to fly. I just felt unsafe up in the air--I couldn't understand what was holding the plane up!

Tonight I will be taking a flight. I am very nervous, but I read your entire course today, and it did help quite a bit. So now I feel a lot safer in the air. The statistics you gave really helped the most, as well as how the plane works, and how it can work during an emergency, like when an engine fails. Your description of the training of the pilots, ATC, and maintenance also helped me. Thanks to you, I feel hopeful now. Thanks again."

From email August 14, 2001

"I ran across your fear of flying workshop while searching for help. I have scheduled many flights and not gone on any of them due to fear. The disappointment that I have felt is overwhelming. All of the family members are angry about the fact that I cannot fly without fear and as a result has caused some harsh feelings. I just finished your workshop and I must admit that it makes me feel better about the airline industry."

From email August 10, 2001

"Thanks so much for making this course available. I am flying on a trip with my husband. I took your course this morning, and already it has helped me tremendously. I have my checklist, and my support materials, and am going to review them prior to my trip. I will take them on the plane with me. I believe this will be very helpful for me."

Where Fearful Fliers Can Find Online Help

Reassuring crash statistics notwithstanding, skittish fliers trying to cope with the aftermath of this week's terrorist airliner attacks can find plenty of online support, from fear-of-flying courses to message boards and e-mail.

"Fear of Flying Help Course (www.fearofflyinghelp.com). Airline Captain Stacey Chance's new site includes a promise to update his self-help course with "the latest information on terrorism, new security procedures, and what to expect as a passenger."

"I just "took" your course and I think it's pretty neat! A nice presentation. I have a good feeling about what you are doing! I will indeed put it in Safe Skies, probably at the top of the Fear of Flying section."
